Moon-Jeweled Midnight
Palette for Alzheimer's Association Gala March 23, 2012: I created this piece to be auctioned at the upcoming Alzheimer's fundraiser.
This scene originated in a memory of a warm autumn night. We had changed the clocks and there was an early moonrise. The moon itself was tinged with gold, as you sometimes see around harvest time. I reflected that it is only because of the gathering dark that we can see the beauty of the moon. The leaves had fallen, but once again I pondered how it is only with the night that the dampness on the leaves can sparkle in the moonlight. We artists obsess about light. This piece celebrates the beauty which is only visible when light wanes.
Moon-Jeweled Midnight is Acrylic Media and Collage on a wooden artist's palette. Palette measures approximately 11-3/4" high by 15-1/2" wide.

Sangria
Shapes within Shapes: Another way to enhance design is to make shapes within shapes. This gives you the chance to practice some of painter Edgar Whitney's design elements, "repetition and alternation." It makes for a very intriguing surface!

Mimosa
Designing in a Grid, Part II - Now we've got a companion. I've continued to design these ladies' celebrations by beginning with a grid. Then I tip parts of the grid to create more energy.

Harbor Roofs
Taste of Encinitas! Can you taste the salt in the air? It's about water, sand, shaded cafes.

Beachfront Textures
Beach Front Textures: I just took a collage workshop with the magnificent and wildly imaginative Carrie Burns Brown. We made mostly non-objective collages from papers we painted and stained ourselves. The wonderful exercise in non-objective pieces is that you have to make them work purely based on good shapes and interesting value pattern, followed by intriguing texture and color. You can't rely on someone liking the subject matter. I have begun to incorporate some of the papers I made into this beach composition. Very different from my usual process and very interesting.

Ancient Majesty
Begin: Artist Morton Kaish recalls reading philosopher William James on how motivation allowed a person to "transcend the obstacles of exhaustion. " By "pushing through", he said, you could "locate new pools of energy". They key was to begin. So artist Kaish posted one word in his studio: "BEGIN." So true! It is only once you begin to work that the ideas come and time evaporates!

In the Cove
In the Cove: I think mixing some representational elements to an abstracted design is nice. Or is it adding abstraction to a representational design? Another in my Harborside series.

On the Ridge
On the Ridge: I'm still working on my Hillside series, too!

Antique
Antique: Continuing to Design by Grid. I'm getting the sense of red lacquer and worn leather. Remembrances of ancestors and their journeys.

Affiche
Affiche: I'm still experimenting with designing in a grid, working with analogous warm colors. Also trying for some interesting texture. As in Graffiti, I'm seeing a wall with traces of old posters, peeled and worn by weather and the passage of time.

Graffiti
How to start a collage: When our class asked Carrie Burns Brown how she begins a collage, she responded wryly: " There is no way to begin a collage. You just start gluing things down." This may be sage advice about starting any painting. I find sometimes it is not until the hand begins to move that the ideas begin to come!
